How To Choose A Contractor To Best Serve Your Needs

  • - Make sure the contractor has a valid license and that it is current and active. The status of any license can be checked by calling the Contractor's State License Board at 1 800-321-2752.
  • - Check references of past customers or past job locations.
  • - Request certificates of insurance from the contractor for worker's compensation (if contractor has employees) and general liability.
  • - Sign a contract with the contractor that states the specific work being done as well as the total cost of the job of a solid bid, or a "not to exceed amount" for a "Time and Material" contract, including payment schedule. This is as much for the protection for the customer as it is for the contractor. It is against the law to require more than 10% down payment, or $1,000, whichever is less, on any job unless there are special order items. Beware of anyone requesting more than this.
